Joseph Lee was born in Hong Kong, raised in Japan, and moved to the US for his college education. When asked what country he is from, he answers, "My mind is very American, my blood is unequivocally Chinese, and my heart is still Japanese."
A multi-cultural person can either be someone with no country, or someone with many countries. Joseph likes to believe that he is trying to escape from the former, and striving to live to the standards of the latter.
He used to highlight his 25+ years at the global firm of KPMG, being a partner in the final 11 years, as his singular achievement, but discovered that people ultimately are not the titles in the tiny boxes of the business cards that they so proudly carry.
Since his departure from KPMG in 2005, Joseph has experienced many transformational events. A novel that he started writing while at KPMG was picked up by a major Japanese publisher and released in 2007. In late 2006, he discovered that his younger sister was stricken by a rare form of cancer called chondrosarcoma, and spent the better part of half a year with her and her 7-year old son. Her passing reminded him how every day that he lived was a gift to be cherished.
A collection of short business stories that he wrote was picked up by another Japanese publisher who expressed an interest to release it in bilingual format. Meeting notes that he had meticulously collected from a major business forum would soon form the core of another book.
A wife who supports (albeit with lots of reservation) Joseph's new found creativity; the joy of hearing a daugher say, "I love my teaching job," and to watch a son prepare to get his degree in drama at NYU, in spite of the long odds of making it in Hollywood--these are the types of experiences that are so much more valuable than the little bullet point that tells a recruiter that Joseph grew a consulting practice from zero to 100 people in 2 short years.
Joseph loves to bring his unique perspective to the world of business.
